Lesson for online-dating novices: Do not use the word ‘curious’ in your profile!

Let me take a step back. According to wikipedia:

Curiosity (from Latin curiosus “careful, diligent, curious,” akin to cura “care”) is an emotion related to natural inquisitive behavior such as exploration, investigation, and learning, evident by observation in human and many animal species.

Now I consider myself a curious person. That is, I love to learn new things, find answers to questions and puzzles, and understand the world as much as possible. For me that literally means: travelling to new places, learning about other cultures, reading up on interesting topics, listening to the life stories of others, and always questioning my world view and life philosophy.

Apparently for other people it means whips, chains, spanking and threesomes.

You see last week I succumbed to peer pressure, and decided to try the free online dating site “Oasis Active”. Take2? was having a lot of fun on there, and I had no good stories to tell on this blog – so I figured I’d give it another try.

However I made the (rookie) mistake of including the word “Curious” in my profile description.

A few hours later I got my first shocking contact request. That is where the profile included “my favourite movie is ‘Secretary’. You should watch it. I’m only interested in girls who want to explore their submissive side. I can be your Master“.

I thought this was just random chance, and politely declined this person, saying “I’m sorry. I don’t think I’m your type.”
